Rather than write one single blog, I have decided to do a series of Newborn blogs, that will focus on a specific area to make it less daunting and definitely an easier read.

The first of my series of blogs, will focus on preparing the Nursery, including all the essential things you will need. They are my personal recommendations and those that I have tried and tested on bringing up my two children. So here goes…

Firstly HUGE congratulations!

I remember, when I found out I was pregnant, I was excited and nervous at the same time. I wanted to be fully prepared for when our little bundle arrived. Speaking to experienced family and friends, helped me source the basics but there were also so many new things on the market, that have been truly amazing for me & baby.

Check out my BEST baby things, to get ready for the newest member of your family. I found that by spacing out the spending, made it easier to manage our finances.

For the first few months (usually 6) your newborn will sleep in the same room as you, so don’t panic about getting their nursery, completely ready. But, you may want to get a few things, in preparation.

Chicco Next2me Crib

After much advice, I decided to not buy a Moses basket and bought this crib, instead. This crib sets up at the same level as my bed, so I had immediate peace of mind as I could see my baby from where I lay.

I also found that my baby also slept better as she could see me. As I was breastfeeding, I could easily scoot her across on to my bed and feed her- saving me the hassle of getting out of bed.

The crib is definitely more roomy than the Moses basket, so I was able to use it comfortably until she was 6 months old.

It flat packs, so when I went to visit my parents, up North, it would go with me. I didn’t need to worry about co-sleeping or using the much larger travel cot. Check out the more of the key product features here.

Flat sheets

Having 5-7 good quality, crib flat sheets, is an ideal number to start with, as baby may well bring up sick or even leak out their nappy (trust me, it happens!). So you will find, them being replaced often. I bought the Clair de Lune Crib Flat Sheets and absolutely love them. Despite several washes, they remained super soft. The quality of these are amazing.

  • Great value 2 pack of fitted sheets
  • Made from 100% super soft cotton jersey
  • Dimensions to fit Crib/Cradle: 70 x 90 x 0.5 cm
  • Suitable from birth
  • Machine washable at 40 degrees

Sleepyhead Baby Pod

This is my third must-buy baby product and have recommended it to so many family and friends. I used the Sleepyhead during the day and at night. Both my children loved it and slept so much better.

It keeps your baby nice and snug, and stops them from rolling onto their tummy and moving around in to strange positions, at night.

The Sleepyhead fit perfectly in the Chicco Next2me Crib too- added bonus!. When visiting family and friends that lived locally, I would take this with me, so baby could nap comfortably. Again, providing a familiar bed for them. Could not recommend this product enough!

Sleeping Aids

It is super important to create the right day and night environment, so your new-borns’ body clock adjusts quickly. Have a look at Tip number 2 on this blog, which has definitely helped my two to sleep through the night since they were 7 months old.

Monitors

I know trying to find the best baby monitor is a minefield. There are so many on the market that you don’t know where to start.

I can help, we have two of these monitors (one in each child’s bedroom) and I am really pleased with them. I am one of those over-protective mommy’s, who needs to know their baby is safe and this monitor, gives me that reassurance.

These are some of the features:

  • 2.4 inch colour LCD screen with improved quality
  • 2.4 GHz wireless technology
  • Digital pan, tilt camera and infrared night vision to monitor baby while in the dark
  • Two-way communication to talk and soothe your baby to sleep during nap time
  • Up to 200 metres range with out-of-range warning

This monitor does the job really well, it is compact enough to pack when travelling, the visual and sound quality is great.

The screen can be blacked out so that you are not disturbed by an annoying light, but still have the piece of mind that you can hear your little one. I have sat in our 200 ft back garden with the monitor on and I can still see my baby having his nap- the wireless technology is amazing.

And, compared to some monitors on the market, I personally think, it is reasonably priced- We have had one of the monitors for close to 4 years and it is still going strong- you definitely get your moneys worth!

Cot Bed

Choosing where your baby sleeps after they move in to their room is a very personal choice, from size, colour, style, with teething bars etc, the list is endless really.

Taking all this in to consideration, the one piece of advice, I would give is to buy a cot bed as opposed to the traditional cots. Simply, because it lasts longer. I have now transitioned my 2.5 year old in to the cot bed and he loves it.

Amazon, sell an amazing range of cot beds. Have a look here: Cot Beds for Nursery for inspiration.

Cot Bed Bedding

Again, the bedding you buy will be a personal choice, but here are my must-haves:

1.   3-4 mattress protectors. Love these

  • 100% Waterproof and Breathable Mattress Protectors – Its polyurethane membrane perfectly blocks all types of liquids, sweat, urine and body fluids.
  • Comfortable – Made with 100% brushed cotton fabric for high absorbency, it is ultra-soft and delicate with your baby skin.
  • Hypoallergenic and Anti Dust Mites – Creates a total barrier against common allergens.
  • Stable Cot Bed Mattress Protector – Easy to fit and keep in position thanks to its elastic skirts.
  • Machine Wash and Tumble Dry – Can be machine washed and dried in the dryer to keep it always clean and hygienic.

2.  3-4 Cot bed flat sheets. Again, this brand is amazing.

  • Great value 2 pack of fitted sheets
  • Made from 100% super soft cotton jersey
  • Dimensions to fit Cot Bed: 70 x 140 cm
  • Suitable from birth
  • Machine washable at 40 degrees

Well, there you have it- a few of my favourite things. Now, you can spend your time thinking of ways to decorate your little ones nursery 🙂
